About the dynamo hub
The hub dynamo, with the dynamo mechanism built into the hub of the font wheel, is quite unlike the old fashioned tyre / bottle dynamos of the past in that they offer pretty much no extra resistance when pedalling
Weight wise hub dynamos are not much heavier than a normal hub / wheel combination
Here is some Brompton dynamo hub history ....
2005
Brompton introduced the option for a SON hub dynamo - beautifully engineered, with a Bush and Muller switched front light and a Spanninga rear stand light (meaning it will stay on when you stop powering it - so that you can be seen by traffic) - the stand light also has a built in reflector for added visibility / to meet regulations
2010
Brompton introduce hub dynamos, replacing the tyre / bottle dynamo system previously used
The Brompton dynamo hubs come in different varieties:
- SON hub dynamo - very lightweight and low rolling resistance - at a price - this was supplied with a Bush and Muller LED front light and Spanninga rear light with stand function
- Shimano hub dynamo - from a well known brand with a slight weight and rolling resistance penalty - but at a cheaper price. Supplied with a Bush and Muller halogen front lamp with a Spanninga rear light with stand function
2013
The Shimano front light was changed from a halogen to a Bush and Miller Lyt B model LED light. It has an on/off switch but no stand light function - so when you stop, the light goes off
2017
The Shimano hub dynamo is also made available in black - it is used on some of the Black Edition and the Nine Streets special edition bikes
2018
These two options (SON and Shimano) have been discontinued by Brompton
2019
As part of the 2019 model range - Brompton started using a new SP (Shutter Products) dynamo - offering good weight, price and rolling resistance. Originally this was only available as a complete kit and only in silver. Later in the year a black version also became available, as well as a wheel only option, allowing for an easier mix and match of your desired lighting options
About the dynamo lighting
The hub dynamo system can power front or both lights - by means of a cable running from the hub to the front light, then another cable (referred to as the wiring loom) running from the front light to the rear light
