Brompton 16 inch wheel folding bikes with:

• 3-speed
• 6-speed
• 12-speed

gearing systems - use a rear wheel with a 3-speed Sturmey Archer or SRAM (Sachs) rear wheel

Handlebar type matters

Which cable you need will depend upon the handlebar type and the shifter type

• M type - the classic Brompton style - also known as Mid rise
• S type - straight / sports style - also known as Low rise
• H type - a slightly higher riding position - also known as High rise
• P type - multi positional riding position - now discontinued and not to be confused with the P Line

Wheelbase matters

Up until 2004 Brompton used a short wheelbase frame - and this was only available with M type / Mid rise bars - we made a guide on identifying Brompton long vs short wheelbase models

Shifter matters

There are effectively two generations of shifters used on Brompton folding bikes

• Pre-2017 - non-integrated gear trigger
• Post-2017 - integrated shifter and brake
