Before you purchase or use this tool:
Splitting and joining derailleur chains varies slightly based on the brand and model of chain.
Some chains such as current Shimano and Campagnolo models require the use of a special replacement rivet - so don't split the chain unless you have one.
Chains from other manufacturers such as SRAM, KMC and Wipperman use a special "master link" to break and re-fix the chain - I remember when all chains used to be like this!
In these cases the chain tool will only be used for resizing the chain by removing some of the rivets / links.
Some chains use rivets which are partially pressed out (but not all the way) to allow the chain to be separated and then re-used to re-join the chain.
Please refer to your chain manufacturers information for full details.
