Brompton Schwalbe Marathon Racer 16 inch tyre

The Schwalbe Marathon Racer 16 x 1  1/3inch tyre was originally introduced on the 2018 model Brompton to replace the Brompton own brand tyres

It is very slightly narrower (at 1 1/3 inches) than the old standard Brompton kevlar (previously known as "green" for it's green label) tyre (which was 1 3/8 inches wide)

This was effectively the replacement for the Brompton Kevlar tyre (if you can remember them)

The Marathon Racer is made by Schwalbe in the 16 inch size specifically for Brompton - previously it was only available for larger wheeled bikes

The tyre is directional - this means it is designed to run in one direction - so should be fitted accordingly. There is a direction indicator moulded into the side wall of the tyre, it is not that easy to spot - we have added a picture of it to try and help

Schwalbe Marathon Racer 16 x 1 1/3 inch tyre features:

  • ETRO size: 35-349
  • Tyre pressure - min: 65 psi / 4.5 bar
  • Tyre pressure - max: 110 psi / 7.5 bar
  • Weight: 300g
  • Tyre bead: Wired
  • Directional: Yes - so the tyre needs to be fitted the correct way around
  • Colour: Black (with sidewall reflective strip)

Inner tube: AV4 (Car type / Schrader valve)
Inner tube: SV4 (Presta / racing type valve)

Note: We always recommend using no tools to fit your new tyre (i.e. hands and fingers only) to your Brompton.
Using tyre levers often results in damage to the inner tube (pinching it when levering on the tyre) or to the tyre bead (trying to force the wire bead over the rim with brute force)

Installing without tyre levers may seem difficult (or impossible) at first - but, honestly,  it's just a matter of technique

The below video shows how to install a tyre without tools - in fact it's the even tougher Marathon plus - but the technique is exactly the same

In order to replace the tyre / tube you also need to remove the wheel (either front or rear) - the below videos show how it should be done.
